Françoise Petrovitch : De l'absence
Nathalie Chaix, Anne Deltour
- Scheidegger & Spiess
- 5 Février 2025
- 9783039422449
Studies the evocative work of French artist Françoise Pétrovitch through the lens of absence.
Françoise Pétrovitch, born in 1964, is among the most distinguished contemporary artists in France. Her art reveals ambiguous, often transgressive worlds that play with conventional boundaries and defy interpretation. The intimate, the fragment, the disappearance, as well as themes such as doppelgängers, transition, and cruelty, run through her works, which are populated by animals, flowers, and creatures and whose atmosphere, alternately bright or nocturnal, rarely leaves a viewer untouched.
Framed by the topic of absence, this volume features new and recent drawings, prints, and video art by Françoise Pétrovitch. Absence can be agonizing, a tragedy. As a counterpart to presence, it is characterized by longing and projection; it describes the passing of time, distance, and lack. Richly illustrated and with essays on Pétrovitch's art and the various techniques she uses, the book offers a deep look into the worlds she creates. -

A selection of Werner Bischof's restored early color images.
Swiss photographer Werner Bischof (1916-54) is best known for his impressive black-and-white images. Far too little is known of Bischof's early color photographs, comprising studio work in fashion and advertising photography as well as reportage from war-damaged European cities. For these, Bischof used various types of cameras, including a Devin Tricolor, an elaborate one-shot color separation device. Some 200 of Bischof's Devin Tricolor negatives have been restored and a selection of them published in this book for the first time.
The beautifully illustrated volume is fascinating not only from a photo-historical perspective; even these early color images reveal Bischof's outstanding, sensitive aesthetic that characterizes his entire oeuvre. Over one hundred color plates are supplemented with texts by Clara Bouveresse, Peter Pfrunder, and Luc Debraine. -

Le Corbusier Ronchamp : photographs by siegrun appelt

Le Corbusier's chapel Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp is arguably the most famous modern religious building and a UNESCO world heritage site. It has been photographed by millions of people, including some of the most distinguished architectural photographers. Austrian artist Siegrun Appelt took an entirely new approach to look at the iconic structure, distinct from all her famous predecessors. Appelt focuses with utter concentration on details, creating compositions of highest sensitivity and precision. Her images highlight the place's spatial structure and lines, Le Corbusier's ingenious direction of light, as well as surfaces and passages. They can be read as hints to these details and at the same time invite a conclusion from detail to the whole.
This publication includes a dialogue between Claudia Kromrei and Otto Kapfinger, in which they investigate the potential of photography to show Le Corbusier's means of expression and discuss the visualisation and perception of material and immaterial elements of this icon of 20th-century architecture.

Aenne Biermann (1898-1933) was one of the leading figures of photography in the 1920s and 1930s. Today, she is considered one of the most important avant-garde photographers of the 20th century. In just a few years of practice, the self-taught artist became a well-known representative of German photography, participating in almost all the important exhibitions of her time. She captured plants, objects, people, and everyday situations in pictures that have to this day lost none of their allure and poignancy. By means of clear structures, precise compositions of light and contrast, as well as narrow framing, she drew a special kind of poetry out of the motifs of her personal environment and developed her own, distinctly modern pictorial style.
This is the first substantial new book in English on this exceptional artist since the 1930s, published to coincide with a major exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in fall 2021. The large-format volume features some 100 of Aenne Biermann's photographs in colour and duotone reproduction, several of them published here for the first time ever. This impressive selection is complemented by essays on Biremann's photography in art-historical context and on selected aspects of her oeuvre.
Text in English and Hebrew.
An exhibition featuring the work of Aenne Biermann is taking place at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art from 5 August 2021.

New edition of the comprehensive monograph on celebrated architect Peter Zumthor, covering his entire career until 2013
Features all key buildings and projects through photographs, plans, drawings, and texts written by Peter Zumthor
The first edition of 2014 won the 2014 Filaf d'argent (Festival International du Livre d'Art & du Film) and the 2014 DAM Architectural Book Award 2014
«Few architects are as patient and exacting as Peter Zumthor, and this monograph captures the materiality and intangible spirit of his work in drawings, photographs, and his brief texts. It was an inspired idea to divide this rich concentration of work into five slim volumes, rather than cram it into one of the mega-publications that entomb other celebrated architects. Each is a delight to hold and page through, and a model of Swiss design from the gray silk covers to the crisp typography and spacious layouts. Rarely has haptic architecture been better expressed in print.» - Michael Webb, The Architects Newspaper, on the 2014 edition
«With the same rigor and poetry of his architecture Zumthor offers us his opera omnia. But so laconic is he that who knows if this is the last.» - Eduardo Prieto, ArcitecturaViva, on the 2014 edition
Peter Zumthor, 2009 Pritzker laureate, is one of the best-known and most acclaimed architects of the present day. Widely admired for his precision and thoroughness, he creates buildings that are responsive to their location and function, and that are remarkable both for their materials and the atmospheric quality of the spaces they enclose.
This five-volume survey of his work until 2013 features 43 buildings and projects, including some that have never been published before. On 856 pages with more than 750 photographs, plans, sketches, drawings and watercolours, and with texts written by Peter Zumthor himself specially for this monograph, it documents a wide range of projects from several world-famous buildings to some that never left the drawing board. The first edition of 2014 won the 2014 Filaf d'argent (Festival International du Livre d'Art & du Film) and of the 2014 DAM Architectural Book Award. -

Open House discusses the topic of temporary housing in architecture, art, design and humanitarian aid. The phenomenon of tiny houses fascinates and is currently trending in various media. In times of large migratory movements from poor to rich countries there is also an urgent demand for temporary housing in many places.
Eighteen international authors explore the intentions behind such constructions, their underlying principles and the lifestyle they convey. Their contributions reveal how these concepts relate to the very notion of habitat, to space, to pragmatic criteria, as well as to the time in which they are elaborated. Moreover, addresses various issues of individual housing through the featured original installations, and spatial experiments.
Open House is published in conjunction with a two-year research project and an open-air exhibition of the same title in Geneva in summer 2022. Book and exhibition comprise around 40 designs by artists, architects, designers, architecture schools and research institutions, as well as humanitarian organisations, such as Andrea Zittel, EPFL Laboratoire ALICE, Global Shelter Cluster, Gramazio Kohler Research at ETH Zurich, Jean Prouve, John Armleder, Kengo Kuma, Kerim Seiler, Matti Suuronen, Maurizio Cattelan and Philippe Parreno, the UNHCR, and others. -

The 14th Dalai Lama is one of the most famous personalities of our time. The exiled principal spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism, one of the most distinguished scholars of his religion, enjoys global recognition and admiration. No other photographer in the world is as close to His Holiness as Manuel Bauer, whose deep interest in Buddhism and Tibet dates back more than three decades. Since 1990, Bauer has visited and travelled with the Dalai Lama many times and has captured his public appearances and events as well as his private life in thousands of atmospheric photographs.
This book features some 200 of these images, many of which are published here for the first time. They offer unique insights into the Dalai Lama's travels and public appearances around the world as well as the media hype they cause. They also give an impression of the private side of this truly global public figure, allowing us to share some of the few moments when the Dalai Lama is alone with himself and his thoughts. A special section documents and visually explains a Kalacakra, a fascinating sand mandala ritual that the Dalai Lama held with followers in the Indian Ladakh region in 2014.
The volume is rounded out with essays contributed by Thupten Jinpa, the Dalai Lama's longtime interpreter and a renowned Buddhist scholar, and Swiss journalist Christian Schmidt. They broaden our view of Tibetan culture and religious tradition and our understanding of the Dalai Lama's significance. -

The art of HR Giger (1940-2014), Swiss-born creator of the legendary monster in Ridley Scott's movie Alien, is currently experiencing a renaissance and is featured in exhibitions as well as in magazines around the globe. This lavish large-format volume offers never-before-seen insights into Giger's private house and garden, both of which are populated by biomechanical sculptures, airbrush paintings, Alien furniture, objects, prints, and self-portraits. French photographer Camille Vivier - best known for her work for Stella McCartney and Cartier - enjoyed exclusive access to the artist's Zurich home and studio for this book, where she worked on her own as well as with models in a series of photo sessions.
Vivier's around 200 photographs form an atmospheric tribute to the arguably most distinguished representative of Fantastic Realism. In addition to images of Giger's studio and his life-size sculptures, Vivier has also documented some hundred objects and artworks, as well as his famous Alien-style garden railroad. In a brief text, Vivier also speaks of the enduring fascination with Giger's art. -

Many psychiatric hospitals in Switzerland house a treasure trove of historical photographs that go back to the 19th century and until now have never been studied properly. Glass slides and negatives, loose paper prints, and photo albums allow fascinating insights into the modernisation of these establishments - and at the same time into the history of photography. The medium that was new at the time was used by psychiatrists to record diagnoses, as well as to show the public life behind institutional walls. Thanks to increasingly handy cameras, it was also possible to record the modest celebrations, and leisure and creative activities.
Behind Walls introduces these testimonials of life and scientific practice in psychiatric institutions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that are accessible to the public for the first time. The essays critically study the use of photography as a medium in psychiatry from different perspectives. -
